At 16, James Kennedy already knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up: an electrician. With high marks in math, a passion for learning how things work, and a “type A” commitment to making sure projects are done properly and look good, the profession was a good fit. Four years ago, with nearly two decades of experience under his belt, he added “business owner” to his title when he launched Kennedy Electric Ltd. with his wife, Katie.
Based in Langley, Kennedy Electric services all of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, offering commercial and residential electrical installations, upgrades, and emergency service work. Business boomed through the pandemic and the fully licenced firm established many strong relationships with contractors and customers. The couple believes they get a lot of repeat business because they take pride in the quality and appearance of their work and train all their employees to adhere to the same high standards of safety and effectiveness.

With four young children, the Kennedys have their hands full balancing running a business with family demands, but they’re keen to keep building a company that will help support their kids’ future. One big piece of advice they share with aspiring business owners is to leave time for administration. While it’s easy to become immersed in hands-on work, it’s essential to keep up with paperwork so everything runs smoothly.
